- cmutt said: Not a real big deal, but here’s something I came across in regards to what specific games may or may not have come in the blue Z-back cabs.
- We all know that 3-KOAM became one of Capcom’s primary sources for cabinets, and that they are the company that produced the Z-back cabs, as well as the Big Blue’s.
- Here is a site that shows a flyer/manual that came directly from the 3-KOAM company. This flyer shows the various cabinets that they produced.
- The flyer shows a blue Z-back that has “Street Fighter 2” installed in it. Now whether or not they ACTUALLY sent out any blue Z-backs with SF titles in them… that’s hard to know.
- But since they actually show it in their official literature… then maybe it’s safe to assume that it’s possible that a SF2, a SF2-CE, or a SF2-HF could have come in a blue Z-back cab, back then.
- Again, not that it matters all that much, but as most of us agree… what we’re all trying to do here is disseminate as much information as possible so that we can all learn more about these Capcom cabs.
- That said, now I feel even better about changing my red Z-back, into a blue Z-back!

- cmutt said: Okay, here are some pics of the speakers from the inside, a closer look at the grills, and a pic of the 4 screw holes in the left corner of the pcb mounting panel.
- I can’t remember what the actual speakers look like on most Big Blue cabs, so I can’t make a direct comparison myself, but they definitely don’t look like the normal Big Blue speakers. Perhaps someone else can provide some insight and pics.
- From what I can see, it looks like the speaker grills/covers on my cab have the bolts welded directly on them, so they pass through the holes in the cabinet and are then held in place with nuts. The placement of the holes looks like they could match up with the holes on the other “common” type of speaker grills.
- Not only that… but the grills also seem to have bolts welded directly on them for mounting the speakers as well.
- These grills seem like they were made to specifically hold speakers of a particular size, and also made to match up exactly with the speaker grill mounting hole positions of a Capcom Big Blue cabinet.
- So it’s possible that maybe this cab did originally have the “common” speaker grills at one time, and at some point they were taken out and replaced with these.
- Also, the two sets of screw holes in the lower left area of the pcb mounting panel are almost certainly proof that there was a Q-Sound amp and transformer there before. The placement of the holes is exactly where the Q-Sound component holes would have lined up.
- (I attached a pic of a Qsound setup from some other cab, for reference)
- But the question it raises in my mind again is, “Why would someone replace the speakers and grills?”.
- I can comprehend that someone might take out the Q-Sound amp to use someplace else or whatever. But is there something special about the original speakers and grills that would make them want to take them out?
- And if so, are they so special that they would want to go through the trouble of either A) locating another speaker grill that exactly matches up to the mounting holes of the originals, or B) fabricating custom speaker grills to exactly fit the existing mounting holes, and go through the trouble of welding bolts to the grills?
- And then there’s the fact that I’ve seen about 3 or 4 of these cabs before.
- Pretty interesting puzzle huh? But given the facts now… I’m tending to lean towards “Sosage’s” theory that some operator/person may have removed the Qsound amps and replaced the original speakers with lesser quality substitutes.
- For what reason… who the heck knows.
- Well I hope that helps, and I hope you guys can help shed some light on this.
- Peace,
- Chris Click to expand…

- cmutt said: Just want to see if any of you guys has any thoughts on this issue yet.
- The fact that it doesn’t seem like anyone else has come across a cabinet with grills or speakers like this before, and the fact that there don’t seem to be any other pictures around showing this variation… leads me to believe that the one that I have, and the others I’ve come across, must have been some custom or aftermarket modification by a local operator, or something along that line.
- But I’d like to know what you guys think as well.

- sosage said: For some reason I didn’t see your other post with the new pictures.
- That is what I am leaning towards as well. I haven’t seen those grills on any other Big Blue, any manuals/promo materials featuring Big Blues, or pictures of Big Blues on the Internet.
- I could see an op swapping these out as a security measure…or someone has stolen the original speakers already…or they’ve blown the speakers and need an affordable alternative.
- …but on the other hand, I can’t say 100% what they are. For a potential op special, they are done really well. Click to expand…

- cmutt said: I guess I’m gonna have to try and find some “original” Big Blue speakers and grills now, cause this cabinet just won’t feel right to me until I do. Heh. When I’m completely done with all of my cabs and my whole setup, I’ll be able to resume some old OG H-town get-togethers. If any of you know Jumpsuit Jesse, he’s one of my old SF mates, and I know of anybody, he’ll appreciate my new SF retreat the most… and he’ll also appreciate the subtlety of the Big Blue having the correct speaker grills too!!

I’ve seen him/interacted with him more online than IRL (seems to be how it is for everything). I went by the nick “SonOfShao” and “ZhiZi” at the time.
- I’ve been off and on in the SF community for what feels like forever, in a lot of different roles. In the Bay Area scene, I was the idiot that would buy brand new CPS-2 boards then let everyone us them for practice.
- Anyways…about those speakers… Click to expand…

- Love hearing these stories cmutt and sosage. I was in middle school when WW came out and instantly got hooked. Before even playing, I remember studying a strategy guide in GamePro or EGM (I forget which), learning all the moves. When I finally got a ride to a local arcade, I thought I was going to beat the crap out of everyone. Then I got my ass handed to me first game.
- Later I would ride my bike to the local stores with friends almost every day to play. SF machines were in our local pizza joint, a dry cleaner, and a game store. On weekends I’d hitch a ride to the malls where there were real arcades. I remember being so nervous playing against the older kids. They had a big blue that just looked so huge and awesome.
- Over the years I’ve fallen in and out of playing. Now that I’m older and have a house I discovered that holy crap, I can actually buy a SF machine! Pictured is my Dynamo HS-5 I’ve been working on: Capped monitor, new CP, bezel, marquee, sticks, buttons, coin door, and computer with hyperspin/mame, arcadgevga. Lots more pictures of the build but I guess I’ll save it for another thread. Would love a big blue! I love hearing about this history, thanks guys!

- Do we have control panel dimensions for Big Blue cabs(late gens)? I have a project BB cab that lacks a control panel.

- Speaking of Big Blue marquees. This is a custom Vampire Savior marquee I created for one of my big blues. I created everything except the character art (including redrawing the Vampire Savior logo). I printed it on backlit film and stuck it onto a piece of plexi. There doesn’t seem to be a legit Vampire Savior BB sized marquee, which sucks.

- Do any of you recommend putting Casters/wheels on these cabinets? They are so dang heavy…I was reading another thread on this and alot of guys like 2” swivel casters mixed with ones with brakes/locks. I was at Lowes yesterday and they had them but are only rated for 80lbs. I’m thinking that would be 4x for each wheel. But I would hate for this cab to feel wobbly in any way either.
- Thoughts/Opinions?
